Dions Pizza Club Read

Our popular local pizza place Dion’s Pizza not only has tasty pizza, but they also offer a Summer Reading program to help promote literacy for children. It’s a really great program that my daughter has enjoyed participating in for the last 4 years. It’s always been a highlight for her each summer! Kids read 6 books to fill up their 1st score card, and then another 6 books to fill up their 2nd score card and complete their program.

Sadly this year they changed the rewards for the program. Previously the kids would receive a drawstring cloth backpack, a Club Read t-shirt, and their second reading scorecard when they turned in their first reading list. Now they just give a slice of pizza when the kids turn in their 1st reading list. While the free slice of pizza is tasty, I’ve found that kids like tangible rewards. My daughter likes seeing the fruits of her labor.

For some reason there were some old Club Read pamphlets where we picked up ours and they still listed the old prizes. So the kids were super disappointed to find they only got a piece of pizza when we showed up at our local Dions. I talked to the staff Facebook and they were kind enough to send the kids backpacks, shirts, stickers, and notepads to make it up to them!

The kids were thrilled to get the goodies and I appreciated that they went out of their way to do that for them! I think it would be great if they did some brainstorming before the 2017 Club Read to find a way to add some prizes back besides just a slice of pizza. Even if it’s just one item, it would be something tangible the kids would have a reminder of their hard work. Pizza gets eaten and forgotten about.

Thankfully they still give out a free book and a free baseball ticket to the kids who turn in their second score cards! This is also a big deal for the kids because they get to go down to the Isotopes baseball offices and pick up those items in such an exciting place. I’m looking forward to a trip down there in a couple weeks because I know the kids will be thrilled! (^.^)

Review – American Girl Doll Pink Star Pants

Super Girl Pilllow BuddyI am one of those people who start shopping for gifts as early as I can. I like to be prepared and it’s easier on my wallet if I buy little bits here and there. No huge chunk to choke on the week of a birthday party. Little Divine is having a birthday in July so of course I started planning as soon as May hit. And I’ve already been shopping. One such amazing gift I have already picked up is the Justice League Pillow Buddy. This is the name given on Walmart’s website – I guess calling her Super Girl was too difficult?? Anywho, our Super Girl pillow buddy is adorable. I rarely see many female superhero items marketed for girls so I get excited when I do. Promoting female superheroes seems to have been lost on society until just recently.

The only down side to Super Girl is that her skirt is VERY short. To some that many not matter, but Little Divine feels strongly that ladies should dress like ladies. Short skirts flashing panties will not do with her. I needed to add some pants or legging to our doll before gifting her to make her look more appropriate.

I trolled Ebay to find doll pants because that’s the place to look other than Etsy and I tend to like Ebay’s prices better. I found the lovely pair of star leggings shown above from a seller with a Facebook page called Neat N Cheap Doll Outlet where they show off the fun doll fashions they make. I specifically looked for American Girl size doll clothes because our Super Girl is 24 inches tall with legs about as wide as an American Girl doll. I loved the color and design of these pants to match her pink Super Girl outfit and I kept coming back to them while looking through the many doll leggings available.

The leggings arrived quickly and are super high quality. Sometimes you get stuff that looks super handmade or cheaply made. These do not. They had white elastic loops inside the waist of the pants, I’m assuming to use to tighten the waist with on the doll if needed. I used them to help give them a tight fit on Super Girl because she has a smaller waist than American Girl dolls.

They look fabulous! (^.^) They coordinate with her outfit perfectly and give her a much more less hoochy look. They are stretchy which is nice, so they fit on her easily. And they are a soft polyester material so Super Girl will still be super cuddle-able even in her cute leggings. I am EXTREMELY happy with the results! I don’t feel I paid more than they were worth and I am pleased with the quality. Check out Neat N Cheap Doll Outlet if you have a kiddo who is into dolls! I am very pleased with my experience with them. ❤

Review – Nutchello Dairy Free Milks by Silk

I like finding dairy free products that taste yummy and don’t make me sick. I saw these two yummy looking drinks from Silk and decided to give them a try. I had both good and bad results. The Rich Dark Chocolate and Walnuts was the one I wanted to like the most. I love chocolate and finding a dark chocolate drink that tastes good is amazing! The taste was really good, but sadly it made me super ill. I am not sure what’s in the chocolate version but it did not settle well with my stomach. I don’t see gluten free labels on either so I have no idea if that is the cause or something else. I tried it on two different occasions and both times I was super ill with massive stomach pains. The alkali processed chocolate might be the culprit. There weren’t a lot of ingredient differences between the two products.

The good news is that the Caramel Almonds and Cashews did not make me ill. It has a good flavor, though very mild. I’ve added it to homemade ice cream as well as coffee, and had it by itself. All of them were very tasty! My family enjoyed it used in my homemade ice cream with pineapple.

The moral of the story is that 2 different products made in the same line by the same company may give you a different reaction. Please be aware that one product made by a company might not make you sick but another might. And even if a product says gluten free or dairy free, it might still make you sick. Cross contamination or other ingredients might cause you to get sick. If you have food allergies or intolerances, test out a small amount of a new food or drink first to see how you react to it. Better safe than sorry!
