Recipe – Homemade Peppermint Castile Exfoliating Scrub

This is seriously one of the easiest recipes I’ve made. I came up with this idea simply because I wanted to have a good exfoliating scrub to use in the shower but I am using up any products I have at home before I buy new ones. I had a bottle of Peppermint Castile Soap sitting under my counter that didn’t have a use right now. I originally bought it to mix with vinegar for our homemade cleaning spray – until I discovered that castile soap and vinegar don’t mix…..

We use other soaps for hand soap so I was left with a bottle that rarely got used. I ordered microdermabrasion crystals online a while ago to use with my face and body wash so I thought why not combine that with the castile soap for a homemade scrub!

The ingredients are only three things: An empty soap dispenser, a bottle of natural soap, and microdermabrasion crystals. I picked up my soap dispenser at Walmart for .88 cents. The Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castile Soap you can find on Amazon. And the microdermabrasion crystals you can find on Amazon as well.

I simply poured soap into the soap dispenser until it was almost full. Then I added 2 tablespoons of microdermabrasion crystals to it. I shook it up and it made the soap foamy white. And done! The crystals will settle on the bottom of the soap dispenser so I shake mine up before I use it.

Now I have an all natural exfoliating scrub with no yucky chemicals in it! (^.^) I like the peppermint scent in the shower because it’s invigorating. I’ve used the scrub on my face and my body. I plan to make more scrubs myself in the future! I like knowing exactly what’s in my products and the words being easily pronounceable.

Have you made a homemade scrub before?

Review – Poshbox Spring Box 2017

As though of you who follow my posts know, I like getting treats for myself occasionally. I spent so much time for many years sacrificing for others and putting my needs on the back burner. And it burnt me out and drained me! Since the end of 2016 I decided to make a lot of changes in my life. I am very happy with those decisions! One of which was to do a little bit more for ME.

We cannot give back and do a lot when we are sucked dry, drained, and burnt out. That’s just a fact. You have to take time to recharge, replenish, and rejuvenate YOU. That can come is a multitude of forms depending on each person, so find what works best for YOU and do it! Our families, friends, communities, groups, activities, organizations, commitments, etc. need us to be healthy and doing well. Why? Because when we are, we are giving our 100% because we are in a good place! When you let yourself get sucked down to the bone, you can’t give anywhere close to 100% because YOU are not anywhere near 100%.

You have to take care of you to be the best you possible. It’s not the same as being selfish or self-absorbed, it’s making sure you are doing what you need on all levels – emotional, physical, health wise, mental, spiritual. You need to put yourself as a priority and take care of you.

One of the ways I decided to pamper myself was with Poshbox. I recently started using 310 Nutrition and I kept hearing from ladies in the group how awesome their Spring Poshbox was so I decided to give it a try! Salted Caramel seems to be the favorite flavor of A LOT of people who use 310 and that was included in the Spring box, which was an extra motivator for me.

Let’s start off with the 310 products.

First off you get a bag of Salted Caramel flavor shake powder. It’s not the super big bag, which I didn’t know, but it does have at least 14 servings in it. As I said, this seems to be a preferred flavor in the 310 Facebook Community group.

Next is a 310 shaker cup. If you’ve been a 310 customer for a while, you probably have a few of these! If not, this is a handy thing for them to send with the shake mix. Nothing like getting a product to try without the necessary equipment!

They even threw in a sample of the 310 Detox tea as well! This is a great way to try it out and see if you like it.

Then there are the Kashmere products! I received a full size Kashmere Kollection Purifying Masque and a travel size Luxurious Toning Oil. I would have LOVED full size of both products, but I’m still very thankful for both! (^.^)

Also included were two Beachwood Essential Oils – apricot kernel oil and Bulgarian lavender! I was out of my lavender oil so this was perfect timing. And the Beachwood lavender smells amazing! I like lavender at night especially to help me relax for bed time. The apricot kernel oil is a carrier oil so it’s good to use with other essential oils that may irritate your skin if you put them on it directly. I sometimes have this issue with my tea tree oil.

Another item included is a small size Purely Wrinkle Free clothing spray that you just spray on clothes to remove wrinkles without ironing. This is handy for those who don’t have the time or desire to iron. The small size is also small enough to fit in a bag on the go in case you need to de-wrinkle while you’re out.

And the last item is Hydroderm Triple Effects Eye Serum. This is a very tiny bottle. I thought they skimped by giving me another travel size until I looked up the price. This 10ml bottle is $40 to $60 normally!

I’ll do a link up now where you can find all of these products at the lowest price in case you don’t want to buy the whole box or you missed out on this box. These links may take you to Amazon if I find Amazon has better prices than the company’s site.

Review – June Box From Birchbox

June is here! It’s officially summer and time for warm weather! June also brings a new Birchbox for me to review. (^.^) My last few Birchbox’s were a little iffy with a pretty even amounts of hits and misses, so I wasn’t sure what this month would bring. The theme for this month is Face the Day – and the box had an abstract art face design on it. I assumed this meant I’d be getting only face stuff, but I ended up with other things as well.

* As with any company you get samples from, ALWAYS CHECK AMAZONG AND OTHER SITES FOR CHEAPER PRICES BEFORE BUYING FULL SIZE FROM THE COMPLANY! If price isn’t an issue for you, buy wherever you like. However, if you are looking to get the best bang for your buck, look on Amazon and other sites because they often have lower prices! I’ve listed the links to other sites like Amazon where you can find each product! *

We kick off our June box with this product – Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle. While this is not a face product, I was actually pleased to see this product in my box. I’ve enjoyed the leave in hair treatments they’ve sent me before, minus the one that gave me headaches, and I was in need of a new one. This has a pleasant smell, yet not overly strong. I put it in my hair after my showers to help protect my hair during any styling, and it also makes it feel softer and healthier. There is no info on this product’s chemical rating on Skin Deep but the product does state it’s vegan and paraben free. I liked this product and will keep using it. I’m unsure if I will buy it full size as there are a few other leave in hair treatments I like too.

You can find this product at Birchbox.
You can also find it at Amazon.

There is a reason I don’t like perfume samples and this is one of them. This sample leaked ALL OVER my June box! And it stinks! I had to remove it to another room to avoid the massive headache it was causing. Not a fan of it at all! Anything that makes me get an instant headache has waaaay too much fragrance and chemicals. And because it leaked, my other samples smelled awful for several days until the smell faded. It’s a very heavily perfumed fragrance. I did not enjoy this sample at all.

You can find it at Birchbox.
You can also find it Amazon.

This sample I was actually very pleased with. It’s The Beauty Crop Blush Duo in the shade Papaya Don’t Preach. I am often a minimalist with my makeup depending on the day, and some days I just wear a little blush and lip gloss. This set was really cute and fits nicely in my purse! I liked the shades I received and I will be using this with me until it’s gone! It gave me a nice rosy and bronzy color on my cheeks that complimented my skin tone really well. I may order this product simply because the colors are great and I like products I can take on the go that won’t make a mess or spill. I use a lot of mineral makeups and they are not easy to take on the go since they are loose powders.

You can find this product at Birchbox.
You can also find it The Beauty Crop website.

Next up is COOLA SPF 30 Rosilliance Organic BB+ Cream. This is the second one of these they’ve sent me and I’m still not sure why. I don’t use a major sunscreen on my face because I’m rarely out in it for more than 30 minutes. And the tint on this is so light it’s not even noticeable. I’d rather have one with more color so you can wear it as a light BB cream and get a little coverage. As it is, this stuff has so little tint that I used it on Little Divine on our park days as she gets 2or more hours of straight sun exposure. Don’t freak out – she’s almost 11. And like I said, there is basically no color. I did like that it wasn’t greasy or shiny on her face. You couldn’t tell she had anything on at all. And no skin irritation on her either. So if you get this, understand there is no coverage from the BB cream at all. It’s mostly just an organic sunscreen.

You can find this product at Birchbox.
You can also find it at Amazon.

The last sample was Balance Me Instant Lift Primer. This stuff is really awesome! I didn’t realize it was going to make my skin all glowy until after I put it on and put makeup over it! Like the MAC Strobe Cream I received in May’s box, this made my face look radiant! I am torn between these two products, but I might choose this one for the face that it tightens skin as well. I love how my face looks with the glowy primers under my makeup! I haven’t used it enough to see major skin tightening, but it went on well under both liquid makeup and powder makeup. And again – glowing skin! Big fan. (^.^)

You can find it at Birchbox.
You can also find it at Bath and Unwind.

So to recap – a few samples I didn’t like and the rest were pretty good. No extra sample this month sadly. The perfume was awful and smelled up all of my products. The COOLA is not something I want to keep getting, yet they keep sending it to me…. The Balance Me Instant Life Primer was my favorite and I’d love to get it in full size! The blush set and the leave in hair stuff will get used up and enjoyed too. (^.^)

I honestly don’t know how much longer I will be staying with Birchbox. There have been several issues, including a specialty box review that it coming and boy the customer service with it was horrible!! Now they don’t give you any points unless you buy full size products. And the samples have been super iffy the last 3 months. I’ve signed up with another company as well, so if their 1st and 2nd boxes are amazing, I’ll be dropping Birchbox. They also send FULL SIZE products, not teeny tiny samples. I get not everyone can do the price difference on those boxes, but when I added both up or a year, there wasn’t a huge difference. So we shall see!

What did you think of your June Birchbox? If you haven’t singed up with Birchbox but you’d like to, it’s only $10 a month with free shipping! Click HERE to sign up today!

Review – April Box From Birchbox

Last month was my birthday month (yay!) and I really wanted to do some sweet things for myself. Both Julep and Birchbox were having great deals so I signed up for both. I cancelled Julep at the end of the month though, simply because the cost of the boxes going forward were not worth the products I got in them. Birchbox had a lower monthly cost of $10 and I got at least 5 samples in each box. For the month of March, I got a whole second mystery box for free! ❤

This month I received 6 samples. I will go through each one with you and tell you what I thought about each product, as well as where you can buy them from!

First up was Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow. I have to say, I really liked this product! The color went on well without looking like foundation. It was a very natural look and a very light feeling cream. I have worn it with and without makeup over it, and both times I didn’t have any issues with it. Also, it did not make my skin break out which is a big deal! I really like this BB cream.

You can find it at Birchbox.

You can also find it on Amazon.

The next product was Davines LOVE Smoothing Shampoo. This stuff was wonderful! I loved how my hair felt after using it! The smell was mild, not super perfume-y like some products. My hair isn’t super frizzy but it is drier towards the ends due to dying it (thank you Harley Quinn cosplay….). This shampoo made my hair feel smoother even before it dried. The only downside to it is the chemicals in it. I try to keep my products as chemical free as I can, and this shampoo has some harsh chemicals in it that aren’t deemed safe on EWG.org/SkinDeep. If they can work on dropping some of the chemicals it would be great stuff to use every day!

You can find it at Birchbox.

You can also find it on the Davines website.

This next product goes hand in hand with the shampoo above, as it’s the matching Davines LOVE Smoothing Conditioner. Again, the product worked VERY well for me! After using this conditioner and the shampoo above, my hair was super silky and soft. It felt great! I loved the very mild scent and the conditioner was very thick – no watered down mess here. As with the shampoo, the only downside is the chemicals in it. I check EWG.org/SkinDeep especially with shampoo and conditioner. This set just has too many things in it that I’m not okay with using day to day.

You can find it at Birchbox.

You can also find it at Davines website.

The next product I received was Number 4 Jour d’Automne Smoothing Balm. This stuff stinks! I popped open the lid to smell it and some of the crème leaked out of the opening. I thought I’d rub that little bit on my hair to test it, but the smell was SO strong it immediately gave me a headache. Any time I turned and my head and my hair moved closer to my face, my head would start pounding super hard. It wasn’t until I washed it all out of my hair and off my hands that my headache went away! I do not recommend the product simply on that fact alone. Maybe others can use it without that issues, but I could not. The smell was VERY strong!

You can find it at Birchbox.

You can also find it at the Number4 website.

The next product I tried was one I had requested before the box shipped. They gave me the option to pick out one item that I for sure wanted to be in this box. I picked this Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Cream. I chose it because the info said it was a calming cream good for skin with redness, blemishes, irritations, and inflammation. My skin can sometimes be a pain so I thought this cream might help. I loved the product! It didn’t have a strong scent, it wasn’t greasy, it made my skin feel softer, and it seemed to help it feel better in general. I didn’t notice a magic overnight difference but I like using it in the morning on my skin because it goes under face powder well and calms my skin. Also a bonus – it doesn’t make me break out! I would definitely recommend this product!

You can find it at Birchbox.

You can also find it at Amazon.

The last product in my April Birchbox was The Beauty Crop Liquid Lipstick in Imma Bawse shade. This is from their GRLPWR collection. The tube is frosted so on the outside the lipstick looks way lighter. When you take off the lid you will see that this shade is a very dark red. That would be great – except this lipstick comes off VERY easily! With my first bite of dinner, I had reddish-pink color all over my food. When I tried to wipe it up I ended up with pink all over my hand and my mouth too. Not an attractive look! It bleeds a hot pink color and comes off with food or water. It stained my hand as well… I do not recommend this product due to the fact that it is not long lasting and will stain when it bleeds off. Great color but poor product. It went straight into the trash along with the Number4 Smoothing Balm.

You can find it at Birchbox.

You can also find it at The Beauty Crop website.

My April Birchbox was a combo of hits and misses. I don’t ever expect a perfect box, though I’ve gotten some pretty close ones! I’ve also gotten some real duds in my boxes as well. This box had a face cream and a BB cream that I enjoyed and am happy to use! The shampoo and conditioner I will finish up but I won’t buy full size due to the chemicals. The hair balm and the liquid lipstick were major DISCARDS FOR ME.

I’m excited to see what’s in May’s Birchbox! (^.^) New subscribers get a FREE item with their first box! If you’d like to sign up CLICK HERE to get started! Remember, you can cancel at any time! And it’s only $10 each month with free shipping!

Leave a comment below letting me know what you thought about your April Birchbox!

Post Holiday Kitchen Deep Clean

img1483471287940

I didn’t know my fingers hurt until I started typing just now! I spent 4 hours this morning deep cleaning my kitchen and I think my body is now on strike. Mr. Divine had a week and a half off from work for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. We had a fabulous Christmas and have been relaxing and enjoying family time this past week and a half. Today marked his first day back to work and my first day back to the daily grind on his work days.

I had a little cleaning to catch up on, but with the chaos of December I hadn’t had time to do as much around the house as I wanted to. I try to deep clean rooms at least once a month, but sometimes more time goes by. I really wanted to scrub the kitchen down since it was used so much for holiday meals and because everyone was home most of the day for a week and a half.

Four hours later and I am exhausted! I got serious about my cleaning though. I got out the toothpicks for detailing and everything! (^.~) The kitchen looks great and I am glad to be done! I like deep cleaning because stuff builds up, especially in a room like the kitchen. You don’t always notice where things splash or drip so a good deep clean helps get everything clean even in the hard to see places.

I’ve also found that the more often I spot clean, the less it takes during my deep clean. I didn’t have time for a deep clean in December so it took a lot of time today. If I make a note to try to do a little extra cleaning here and there throughout the month, my deep cleans will be a bit easier on me.

Also, Little Divine had been missing a few places with her daily chores as well. One part of her chores is to sweep and mop the kitchen with the Swiffer mop, and to wipe down the counters. I found some spots along the base-boards and on the floor she had missed and I let her know that it’s important to make sure spots aren’t skipped so they don’t get even yuckier. Kids are kids, they will not do the most meticulous job ever. However, they won’t learn how to do better with something unless you show them how and remind them when needed.

I pulled Little Divine into the kitchen and showed her the areas she had been skipping that she needed to do with her daily cleaning. I wasn’t mean or harsh, I just showed her what it should look like clean and how to get it done. Hopefully she remembers to work on those areas as well!

You can’t have a post about cleaning without talking about your supplies. My supplies are not fancy by any means but I have found that they work very well for us! Here is my supply round-up!

Cleaning Spray – I try to avoid anything with harsh chemicals as Little Divine uses these products to clean too. The simplest method I’ve found for a good cleaning spray is to take a full size spray bottle and fill up to where the neck of the bottle starts to thin with distilled white vinegar (from the grocery store). I then add about 2 tablespoons of blue Dawn dish soap to it and put the lid back on. I gently turn the bottle to mix them together, I don’t shake it or it makes a ton of bubbles. This cleaner not only cleans well but it also disinfects and it doesn’t contain anything harsh! The vinegar smell fades after a few minutes. We have a spray bottle full of this mix in each bathroom and the kitchen.

Counter Cleaning – Occasionally I will use peppermint castile soap to clean the tops of my counters. I wet a cloth or paper towel and add just a drop or 2 on it before wiping the counters down. You don’t need much to get the counters clean and it leaves a nice peppermint smell in the kitchen. DO NOT MIX CASTILE SOAP WITH VINEGAR TO MAKE A SPRAY! The combination is a nasty, gloppy mess that cannot be used. I learned this the hard way. I will use one or the other but not both at the same time.

Scrubbing – When you have stuck on stuff, a stainless steel scrubber will get just about anything off! Be careful that you don’t use it on surfaces that it will remove paint from. Some counters are laminate and it could scratch the design/printing off. Same with the pain on your stove. They can be a pain to clean food out of but I’ve found that putting them in a sink full of hot water and swishing them around gets most everything out. I feel this works better than just running them under water alone. Swishing them around while immersed gets water moving throughout the scrubber and gets more debris out. These are super long-lasting if you keep them clean! We also run ours through the dishwasher as well, to help with both cleaning and to sanitize it.

Sponges – I try to use reusable items as much as I can while cleaning. Sometimes you just need a throw away item like a paper towel. Generally though, I use these great washable dish sponges that do a fabulous job! One side is rougher for scrubbing and the other side is softer. We run these through the dishwasher several times a week to keep them extra clean. They can last a long time and have replaced our disposable sponges!

Mopping – We currently use a Swiffer wet mop for daily cleaning, though I will hand clean the base-boards and areas under the cabinets because I don’t feel it cleans those well. It’s more of a daily light cleaner than a heavy-duty cleaner. Ours sprays cleaner out and is light enough that Little Divine (10) can carry it around and use it. Our family feels the orange cleaning spray works the best for our needs. It cleans well, smells good, and doesn’t leave a residue on our floors.

Small DetailingToothpicks! They are so low-cost but they are perfect for tiny areas where grime and dust build up, like knobs on the stove. I will wet a toothpick and use it to clean out those time spots. If the space is a bit bigger I will cover the top of the toothpick with a damp paper towel and use it to get in harder to reach spaces like behind the knobs on the stove. They aren’t super durable so I went through about 10 toothpicks today alone, but they get the job done in spaces I couldn’t get super clean with rags and cloths. I buy my toothpicks in the little containers that are round or square so they can be stored easily and kept clean.

After Care – My hands get destroyed from cleaning  and I feel it’s too hard to do the work wearing gloves. Instead I use a really great hand cream after I’m done cleaning. This is super important if you are going to be cleaning without gloves. I use a hand cream rather than a lotion because I feel it is thicker and repairs better. Look for ingredients in a hand cream that will nourish your skin well! I tend to like something with a little fruity smell for a little wake up and perk up scent after all my hard work. (^.^)

If you have a favorite cleaning product, let me know what it is and why you love it so much! ❤

Review – Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant Bergamot and Lime

bergamot-lime for blog

Photo from Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant website

I am always on the lookout for natural products that do a fantastic job. I’m trying really hard to cut out any unhealthy products and replace them with natural alternatives. Deodorant is a big one because the regular stuff contains so many harsh chemicals. I will admit that I am not a princess, I do not sparkle or glisten or glow. I sweat. Just like most humans. Which means I need a natural deodorant that WORKS against smells when I sweat.

I really, really, really wanted this deodorant to work for me. Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant comes highly reviewed on Facebook and people brag about how well it works. I tried the Bergamot and Lime version. I liked the smell of it, very strongly lime scented. It has a very fresh smell. And it does actually work! I went all day not smelling which was super awesome!

The downside is that I seem to be allergic to something in it. I’m not sure exactly which ingredient/s I’m allergic to, but I’m thinking maybe the arrowroot powder. When I use this deodorant my armpits get super red, bumpy, and itchy. I tried several times and it happened every single time I used it.

I had to stop using it. For people who aren’t allergic to the ingredients, this could be an awesome alternative to the chemical filled stuff. If you have an issue with this product, keep an eye out for reviews of other natural deodorants that don’t irritate my skin. Like with anything, it’s trial and error to find products that are the best for YOU.

You can find Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant on Amazon as well!

Bergamot & Lime
Lavender & Sage
Cedarwood & Juniper
Ylang-Ylang + Calendula

On Amazon you can find them possibly with a lower price and free 2 day shipping if you’re an Amazon Prime member. I use Amazon a lot so the free 2 day shipping and reduced prices are worth it by far.

I also found Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant locally at Sprouts Farmer’s Market. It might be available in other local stores as well.
